Air France Airbus A330-200, registration F-GZCO performing flight AF-217 from Mumbai India to Paris Charles de Gaulle France with 198 passengers, was in the initial climb out of Mumbai’s runway 27 when an engine CF6 surged and forced the crew to reduce the engine to idle thrust.

The airline has confirmed an engine surge prompted the crew to idle the engine and return to Mumbai. The passengers were taken to lodging until a replacement airplane arrives.

Maintenance personnel had forgotten a tool inside the engine which caused extensive damage to the engine.
